Robotic Environments: Reconfigurable Architectural Surface

Course Objectives

During the academic year we will explore how robotics is already integrated into architecture and how it might be re-thought by designers focusing on social and cultural interaction and experience over multi-functionality, flexibility or efficiency. Instead of replacing existing functions with robotics we will look at innovations in design that bring a new animated sensibility and liveliness to spaces and places.

We will develop a working knowledge of motion, animatronics, vertical transportation, 3D signage, theater design and robotics as it impacts architectural and urban design. The students will also become proficient in design methods and media for designing moving building scale elements. The Research Studio will culminate in a comprehensive design project that integrates motion elements into an architectural design of a free standing building proposal in an urban context.
